Back around Thanksgiving or Christmas (can't remember now which one) Patrick's work gave us a turkey. I love turkey. I'm just terrified of cooking my own turkey. I used to have a hard time touching raw meat to cut it. Watching my mom make meatloaf amazes me. I have the hardest time sticking my hands in a bowl of raw meat and squishing it all around with some eggs, ketchup, and oatmeal. It kind of makes me sick just thinking about it.
This why nearly two or more months after getting this turkey it still sits in our freezer. Taking up lots of space. I just don't want to dig out the gizzard and all that other fun stuff inside that I'd rather imagine was never there. So if any of you super women out there would like to encourage me in this endeavor or shoot even come help me, I'd love it.
I'm sure Patrick would like some turkey sandwiches for lunch these coming weeks and I'd like a little more room in my freezer. So bring on the encouragement (or help).
I bet you could get Tara over there to help you with it! She has cooked many turkeys =)
ReplyDeleteGirl, get that out and cook it! Turkey is so good and it really isn't that gross. The guts are packaged nicely in a bag and the only other thing in there is the neck. Just yank it out too and you are ready to go! :) Turkeys are super easy to cook, so go for it.
ReplyDeleteummm... Hannah... i'm in the same boat... I have NEVER cooked one and i have one sitting in my freezer! but I am thinking a pair of plastic gloves will go a long way! AND one of those handy dandy roasting bags you can get at the grocery store by the tin foil!!
ReplyDeleteI volunteered to cook the turkey the first Thanksgiving we were married. As I dug out the gizzards and neck, my mom was on the phone and I was screeching about how nasty the process was. I put a plastic bag over my hand so I didn't have to touch any of it. That's really the worst part, and it's not so bad after the first time. Go for it, girl! Then you'll be able to teach Lydia someday!
ReplyDeleteI'm terrified of cooking a turkey, so I have nothing useful to say - except good luck! Let us know how it goes!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was worried about it the first time I cooked a turkey by myself. But it's really not that bad! Use a plastic grocery or ziploc bag to cover your hand when you pull the gross stuff out, and that's that.
ReplyDeleteTurkey is so easy - really. I like the innards in gravy, but you can just pull out the bag and toss it. Thaw the whole thing in the fridge for a day or two. Put it in a roasting pan and bake. Baste every hour or so. Stick the baster in the drippings and squirt over the turkey. Cover with tinfoil the last hour and your done. You can get fancy with marinades etc... but for your first turkey, go the easy way. There should be a cooking time somewhere on the wrapping. Good luck.
ReplyDeletei have no idea how - but i'll attempt it with you if you want! and laedin and lydia can have a baby date
ReplyDeleteLike Melissa said-- it's not so bad!! Two yanks, then rub it down with butter and sprinkle pepper, garlic & salt on it and roast it whole so there's no cutting up involved... Or like Kasey above suggested; that sounds easy!
ReplyDeletethe neck, gizzard, liver just put in a pan and boilwith chopped celery, onion and cook till its done, cool the meat and chop up for your dressing and use the juice in your dressing, the turkey just baste with butter add salt and pepper put in roasting pan and bake, cover with lid are tin foil and evry now and then baste with drippings, cook at 350 for how ever big the turkey is, it will be great,
